Franklin Square is a 105-unit upscale condominium community on a six-acre site located just five-minutes walking distance from the New Jersey Transit station in downtown Metuchen, New Jersey. This smart growth community was completed in 2001 and designed to fit in architecturally with Metuchen's historic quaint neighborhoods, provide scenic and pedestrian-friendly streetscapes and play a vital role in Metuchen's thriving downtown. The Franklin Square community was named after and designed to resemble Metuchen's historic Franklin School, designed by Walker and Morris Architects and built on the site in 1909. This building, demolished in 1999 to make way for the Franklin Square Townhouses, was actually the third Franklin school in Metuchen. The first was constructed ca 1807 and is now known as the Old Franklin School or Borough Improvement League clubhouse. The second, built on the Franklin Square site in the 1870s, was later moved to the corner of Pearl and New Street before it was destroyed by fire. The architecture of the third and largest Franklin School was the inspiration for the Franklin Square townhouses, with traditional brick exteriors and white decorative trim. However, the interior layouts resemble modern brownstone-style living, with high ceilings, interesting angles, large windows, and wide entrances. In 2002, the community was the recipient of the 2002 Achievement in Planning Award from the New Jersey Planning Officials (NJPO), awarded the silver medal from the National Association of Home Builders in the category of Best Smart Growth Community and featured on the Winter 2002 cover of Land Development magazine. |
